{"id":532,"date":"2026-07-09T17:50:37","date_gmt":"2026-07-09T16:50:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=532"},"modified":"2026-07-09T17:50:38","modified_gmt":"2026-07-09T16:50:38","slug":"youth-disengagement-threatens-agriculture-in-abraka-community-survey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=532","title":{"rendered":"Youth Disengagement Threatens Agriculture In Abraka Community\u2014Survey"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>By Tracy Omenogor<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stakeholders in Abraka, Delta State, have raised concern over the declining state of agriculture in the community, attributing it largely to low youth participation and lack of interest in farming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to residents, many young people in Abraka are shying away from agriculture, a development experts say could worsen food production and drive up living costs in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miss Esther, a 300-level Mass Communication student of Delta State University, Abraka, said the &#8220;quick money syndrome&#8221; among youths has reduced interest in farming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Most youths are not seeking hard labour. They prefer a soft life. Today, the majority of those involved in agriculture in this community are aged women,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miss Esther further noted that low participation in agriculture has contributed to the high cost of living in Abraka, leading to inflation in food prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also lamented that available farmlands are increasingly being converted for infrastructure such as houses, stores, and hostels instead of agricultural production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She urged youths in Abraka and across Nigeria to embrace agriculture through farming, animal rearing, or fishery, stressing that there are long-term benefits to be gained from the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another resident, Miss Praise Ekrika, shared that growing up in an environment where agriculture was practiced gave her an interest in agricultural production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, she said many youths still view farming as stressful, while parents prefer their children to pursue white-collar jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Parents disregard agriculture even though it is one of the major means of survival,&#8221; she stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miss Ekrika also decried the poor state of farmlands in the community, alleging that some are being used as refuse dumps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said the lack of motivation and poor maintenance of farmlands has discouraged youths from getting involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both respondents agreed that the future of agriculture depends largely on youth involvement, and called for greater support and sensitization to encourage young people to see agriculture as a viable and profitable venture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They emphasized that increased youth participation in agriculture would help boost food security, reduce food prices, and create employment opportunities for young people in Abraka and beyond.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Tracy Omenogor Stakeholders in Abraka, Delta State, have raised concern over the declining state of agriculture in the community, attributing it largely to low youth participation and lack of interest in farming.
