For many students of Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka, church is no longer limited to Sunday services. With smartphones now central to campus life, local churches are turning to WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Telegram to connect with students who cannot always attend physical gatherings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pastor Akpovwre Celestine Ogheneruro of the House of Perfection Gospel Center, Abraka, said the shift to digital platforms has become necessary to meet young people where they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe age and time to which we belong is social media inclined, so to have an excellent reach we need to engage social media,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to him, the church\u2019s online content regularly reaches hundreds of young people. He described the platforms as effective for evangelism and fellowship, though he noted that managing the online services remains a major challenge for the church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One beneficiary of the digital outreach is Miss Chisom John, a 100-level Physiology student and member of the House of Perfection Gospel Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said her fellowship uses social media to share teachings on the Holy Spirit, Christian doctrine, the reality of the New Creation in Christ, unity in the Body of Christ, devotionals, sermon excerpts, announcements, and prayer sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe online content from my fellowship has greatly impacted my spiritual life,\u201d she said. \u201cIt has helped to align my mind with God\u2019s Word and deepen my hunger for Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThrough these teachings, I have gained a clearer understanding of God\u2019s love and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/strong>John said the teachings also help her maintain a consistent relationship with God despite academic pressures. \u201cThey remind me to set aside time daily for prayer, fellowship, and personal communion with my Heavenly Father, even if it is only for an hour,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While she makes efforts to attend Sunday services physically, she noted that online broadcasts and recorded messages have kept her connected during periods when academic responsibilities prevent physical attendance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAlthough online participation cannot completely replace the atmosphere and interaction of physical fellowship, it serves as an effective means of staying spiritually engaged and continuing to grow in faith when physical attendance is not possible,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the role of social media in worship, she gave a balanced view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSocial media can either help or distract students from true worship, depending on how it is used,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOn the positive side, it has become a powerful tool for spreading the Gospel and making Christian resources easily accessible. But it can also become a distraction when it consumes excessive time and shifts attention away from God.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her conclusion: \u201cSocial media itself is not the problem; rather, the way it is used determines its impact. When used wisely and with discipline, it can be a valuable tool for spiritual growth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As more churches in Abraka expand their digital presence, leaders like Akpovwre say social media has become an essential tool for reaching a generation that lives online, even as they work to overcome challenges of platform management and content delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
