A staff of Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka, Mr. Benjamin Okafor Okoye, has described poultry farming as a highly lucrative business, saying it generates more income than most government jobs due to the constant demand for chicken and other poultry products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Okoye, an engineer and laboratory technologist who also rears broilers, said he decided to go into poultry farming about six years ago and now supplies slaughtered birds directly to consumers through his restaurant instead of selling through middlemen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPoultry products are in constant demand because people consume chicken at different times of the day. Unlike some other businesses such as clothing, food is a necessity, so poultry farming provides a steady market,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to him, combining his professional work with agriculture has provided financial stability and serves as an example of diversification for graduates. He said he later returned to study Laboratory Science Technology at DELSU, a qualification he currently practices alongside his engineering background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the profitability, Okoye noted that poultry farming comes with significant challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He identified the rising and unstable cost of poultry feed as the major problem affecting profit and expansion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also decried the difficulty in getting reliable and skilled workers in Abraka to manage the farm effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf I had enough workers, I would have expanded my operations to about three to four branches of my restaurant. But the shortage of labour has slowed down growth,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that inadequate manpower sometimes affects farm management and cleanliness, which in turn impacts productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Okoye encouraged Nigerians, especially youths and graduates, to embrace agriculture instead of depending solely on white-collar jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat some people consider a dirty or stressful job can actually be a source of stable income and financial freedom,\u201d he said. \u201cLearn practical skills that can sustain you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He urged government and stakeholders to support agriculture through improved access to affordable feed, infrastructure, and training for skilled farm workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Okoye concluded that with the right mindset, funding, and commitment, poultry farming can contribute significantly to food security, employment creation, and self-reliance in Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some respondents who reacted to his experience agreed that agriculture can be a reliable source of income if properly managed. They supported his call for skills acquisition and self-employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, others observed that challenges such as high feed costs, fuel price increases, disease outbreaks, and labour shortages may discourage beginners without enough capital or experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agricultural experts note that poultry farming remains one of the fastest-growing agribusinesses in Nigeria, particularly in urban and semi-urban areas where demand for meat and eggs is high. The sector is also capital intensive and requires proper management, patience, and consistency to succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
