{"id":570,"date":"2026-07-10T12:46:29","date_gmt":"2026-07-10T11:46:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=570"},"modified":"2026-07-10T12:46:30","modified_gmt":"2026-07-10T11:46:30","slug":"off-campus-living-puts-financial-pressure-on-delsu-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=570","title":{"rendered":"Off Campus Living Puts Financial Pressure on DELSU Students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Adere Christabel Oghenekparoboro<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, have expressed concern over the rising cost of off Campus accommodation, saying high rents, agent fees, transportation expenses, and inadequate facilities are placing increasing financial pressure on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With limited spaces in the university&#8217;s hostels and a growing student population, many students are compelled to seek accommodation in private hostels and lodges around the university community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 100 level Journalism and Media Studies student, Marvelous, who resides off campus along Police Station Road, said she pays \u20a6300,000 in annual rent and an additional \u20a690,000 as agent&#8217;s fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to her, the urgency to secure accommodation during the admission process left her with little choice despite the poor condition of the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>READ ALSO:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=491\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"491\">Unmasked: Scores Of Students Converge As<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I was under pressure to get accommodation so that I could complete my screening, although electricity is stable and I share my room with only one person, but the building is old and the soakaway gives off an unpleasant smell,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 300 level Mass Communication student, Collins Praise-God, who also lives off campus said she spends \u20a6350,000 on rent and \u20a640,000 on agent&#8217;s fees annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She noted that while she enjoys privacy, the cost of transportation and environmental noise have become daily challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I spend about \u20a61,500 on transportation every day, and the noise from the main road often makes it difficult to study,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She added that the distance between her hostel and the university also increases her daily transportation expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another student, Eselemor Rosemary,&nbsp;
