Students of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, have expressed concern over the rising cost of off Campus accommodation, saying high rents, agent fees, transportation expenses, and inadequate facilities are placing increasing financial pressure on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With limited spaces in the university’s hostels and a growing student population, many students are compelled to seek accommodation in private hostels and lodges around the university community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 100 level Journalism and Media Studies student, Marvelous, who resides off campus along Police Station Road, said she pays \u20a6300,000 in annual rent and an additional \u20a690,000 as agent’s fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to her, the urgency to secure accommodation during the admission process left her with little choice despite the poor condition of the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I was under pressure to get accommodation so that I could complete my screening, although electricity is stable and I share my room with only one person, but the building is old and the soakaway gives off an unpleasant smell,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 300 level Mass Communication student, Collins Praise-God, who also lives off campus said she spends \u20a6350,000 on rent and \u20a640,000 on agent’s fees annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She noted that while she enjoys privacy, the cost of transportation and environmental noise have become daily challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I spend about \u20a61,500 on transportation every day, and the noise from the main road often makes it difficult to study,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, a 100 level Journalism and Media Studies student, Egobi Doreen Olonitate said she pays \u20a6300,000 in rent but lacks regular access to electricity and water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We fetch water from outside the hostel and spend extra money charging our phones and other devices because there is no electricity,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She added that the distance between her hostel and the university also increases her daily transportation expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another student, Eselemor Rosemary,  said she pays \u20a6280,000 in annual rent and \u20a665,000 as an agent’s fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although she described her environment as relatively secure with a stable water supply and electricity, she  also identified transportation costs as one of her major concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the financial burden, the students said they preferred living off campus because it offers greater privacy, comfort, fewer roommates, and more independence than the university hostels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The students called for more affordable accommodation options and improved living conditions around the university community, noting that beyond rent, many students also struggle with agent fees, transportation costs, and inadequate infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They expressed hope that increased investment in student housing would ease the burden on undergraduates and provide a more conducive environment for learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
