Residents of Abraka in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State are facing increasing hardship as the rising cost of food continues to strain household incomes, affect businesses, and reduce students’ purchasing power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A market survey conducted at the Abraka Main Market showed sharp increases in the prices of staple food items. A measure of garri, which sold for about \u20a61,200 earlier this year, now costs between \u20a61,800 and \u20a62,200, depending on the quality, A basket of tomatoes that was previously sold for about \u20a615,000 now costs as much as \u20a630,000, while the prices of rice, beans, yam, and vegetable oil have also increased significantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Traders attributed the persistent rise in food prices to increasing transportation costs, insecurity in farming communities, poor road networks, and fluctuating fuel prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A trader at the market, Mrs. Agbiyaye Endurance Okeoghene, said the rising cost of moving goods from farms to the market has contributed significantly to the increase in food prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another trader, Mrs. Nkechi Maryjane, who has operated a provisions business in the market for more than 10 years, mentioned that traders are also struggling with the high cost of doing business, “Fuel is expensive, the roads are bad, and we also pay loading fees, every week, the prices of goods change, customers complain, but we buy these items at higher prices too, transportation alone has become very expensive,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The impact of the rising food prices is being felt across the community, particularly among students of Delta State University (DELSU), who make up a large proportion of Abraka’s population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 200-level student, Gentle Prime, said the cost of preparing meals has increased significantly compared to last year, “What I used to spend on food in one week is no longer enough for three days, many students now skip meals or buy cheaper food because they cannot afford balanced diets,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Restaurant operators in the town also said they are finding it difficult to cope with the rising cost of food, some have reduced the quantity of food served, while others have increased their prices in an effort to remain in business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Economic analysts attributed the continued rise in food prices to a combination of factors, including higher production costs, exchange rate instability, insecurity affecting agricultural production, and disruptions in food supply chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residents expressed concern that the situation could worsen, if inflation continues to rise without effective government intervention. They warned that beyond reducing household purchasing power, the rising cost of food is affecting nutrition, increasing the cost of living, and placing additional financial pressure on families, traders, and students in Abraka.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
