The Mass Communication male football team emerged champions of the Delta State University (DELSU) Dean’s Cup,\u00a0 after defeating the Journalism team 2\u20130 in the final played at the Campus III Main Field on June 25, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The contested encounter attracted students, lecturers, and football enthusiasts who gathered to witness one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both teams began the game with determination, creating scoring opportunities in the opening minutes, while Journalism enjoyed spells of possession, Mass Communication remained disciplined in defence and relied on quick counterattacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mass Communication broke the deadlock in the first half after sustained pressure on the Journalism defence, taking a 1\u20130 lead into the break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Journalism returned strongly in the second half in search of an equaliser, but the Mass Communication defence stood firm to deny several attacking moves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The turning point of the match came midway through the second half when the Mass Communication coaching crew introduced a substitute whose arrival strengthened the team’s attack and increased pressure on the Journalism defence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tactical change paid off as Mass Communication scored a second goal to extend their lead to 2\u20130, effectively sealing victory and the Dean’s Cup title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking after the match, a representative of the Mass Communication team attributed the victory to the players’ discipline, teamwork, and the coaching staff’s tactical decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The substitution changed the rhythm of the game and gave us fresh energy, we remained focused and worked together until the final whistle. We appreciate our coaches and supporters for standing by us throughout the competition,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the defeat, the Journalism team was commended by spectators for its resilience, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students who watched the final described it as one of the most exciting matches of this year’s Dean’s Cup, with many identifying the second half substitution as the decisive moment that changed the course of the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dean’s Cup is an annual competition designed to promote sportsmanship, teamwork, and healthy rivalry among departments within the university.
