Professor Ufuoma Godstime Sorhue, a Pofessor of Agriculture at Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has urged Nigerians, particularly young people, to embrace agriculture as a profitable and sustainable career, describing the sector as a key driver of national development and economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking during an interview, Professor Sorhue challenged the perception that studying Agriculture offers limited career opportunities, insisting that the discipline has evolved beyond traditional farming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to him, agriculture remains the backbone of every stable economy, providing food security, employment, and opportunities for economic diversification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Agriculture remains the bedrock of a stable economy, any country that must move forward must not depend only on what stays underground but must also live by what comes out of it,” he said<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor Sorhue explained that modern agriculture integrates science, technology, business, and environmental management, creating a wide range of career opportunities for graduates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted that graduates of Agriculture can work as teachers, researchers, agricultural consultants, extension officers, and public servants, while others can establish commercial farms, engage in agribusiness, food processing, livestock production, and other agricultural value chain enterprises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The professor attributed the declining interest in Agriculture among many young Nigerians, to the misconception that the profession is limited to crop cultivation and animal rearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He urged students and parents to change their perception of the discipline, noting that technological innovations, mechanised farming, and the increasing demand for agricultural products have made the sector more attractive and rewarding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also called on governments at all levels to invest more in agricultural education, research, and infrastructure to encourage greater youth participation in the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to him, increased investment in agriculture would boost food production, reduce unemployment, strengthen the nation’s economy, and promote sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He encouraged Nigerian youths to view agriculture as a profession with enormous opportunities for entrepreneurship and wealth creation,  rather than as a last minute career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor Sorhue said that with innovation, commitment, and adequate government support, agriculture has the potential to transform Nigeria’s economy, and improve the livelihoods of millions of citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
