they said.

The students also appealed for more beauty pageants, modelling competitions, and other social events, saying such programmes encourage creativity, build confidence, and promote interaction among students.

“Beauty pageants are exciting and bring students together, they also provide opportunities for students to showcase their talents,” they added.

A pageant judge who spoke with this reporter supported the call, describing pageants as one of the most popular forms of student entertainment.

READ ALSO: DELSU professor urges Nigerians to embrace agriculture as a viable career

“Many students are interested in pageants because they provide exposure and help build confidence, the university should organise more of such events,” the judge said.

While calling for more recreational activities, several students also expressed concerns over the university’s recently introduced dress code policy.

The policy, announced through an official memo at the beginning of the semester, prohibits the wearing of items such as crop tops, nose piercings, revealing outfits, and certain fashion accessories, considered inappropriate by the university.

A 100 level Journalism and Media Studies student, Oluchukwu Anigbogu Miracle, said the policy has limited students’ ability to express themselves through fashion.

READ ALSO: Students Welcome Renovated Lecture Halls at DELSU Site III

“We are in a university, not a secondary school, students should be allowed to express themselves through their dressing as long as it remains decent,” she said.

Similarly, Jimoh Hope Omoyemwen, a 300 level Education student, said many students are finding it difficult to adjust to the new regulations, because they had already invested in clothing and accessories that are now prohibited.

Some students also noted that enforcement of the policy has become stricter in some faculties, where students may be denied access to lecture halls if their dressing is considered inappropriate.

Despite the concerns, some students acknowledged that the dress code was introduced to promote decency and preserve the university’s image.

READ ALSO: Banditry, Insecurity Drive Food Prices Beyond Reach as DELSU Students, Traders Seek Government Action

Beyond activities organised on campus, students also reflected on Abraka’s annual cultural festival, which attracted residents and visitors from different communities, while some described the festival as an opportunity to experience the host community’s cultural heritage, others said they stayed indoors in line with safety advisories due to the large crowds.

Students, however, maintained that community festivals should complement, rather than replace student focused entertainment programmes within the university.

They urged the university management to create more opportunities for social interaction, talent development, and recreational activities while maintaining a balance between campus discipline and students’
