Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, is set to introduce a new football competition known as the DELSU Champions League<\/strong> as part of efforts to promote sports participation and student engagement on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chairman of the University Sports Committee, Hon. Comrade Iweham GodisGreat Onyekachi, disclosed this during an interview, stating that the competition is expected to commence on June 10, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to him, the tournament will allow students to represent their favourite football clubs rather than their departments, faculties, or cultural associations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He explained that popular European clubs including Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain are expected to be represented in the competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Onyekachi said the initiative was inspired by students\u2019 passion for club football and aimed at increasing participation in sporting activities within the university community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposed Champions League competition will complement existing sporting events in DELSU, including the HOD Cup, which is contested among departments, and the Dean\u2019s Cup, where departments compete within faculties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The university also organizes the Vice-Chancellor\u2019s Cup, a knockout football competition involving departments across the institution, with the final usually played during Students\u2019 Union Government (SUG) Week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another major sporting event is the Inter-Faculty Cup, which is held every two years and features competitions in football, basketball, volleyball, athletics, table tennis, swimming, and other sporting activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The SUG Director of Sports, Comrade Sunday Collins, said sporting activities remain important in promoting unity, teamwork, and healthy competition among students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, the NADESSUTU Sports Director, Comrade Okwuonyekwu Victor Ifechukwude, noted that sports help bring students from different backgrounds together and encourage social interaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of DELSU, Prof. Samuel Asagba, has announced plans to provide additional sports infrastructure aimed at supporting student athletes and improving sporting activities in the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students have expressed optimism that the proposed DELSU Champions League will provide another platform for young football talents to showcase their abilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
