Students and residents of Abraka have continued to express concern over the rising cost of accommodation in the university town, with many describing the situation as a major challenge amid prevailing economic difficulties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The increase in house rent has affected many students of Delta State University (DELSU), who say the rising cost of accommodation has added pressure to their already increasing academic and living expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking with our correspondent, a caretaker in the Ekrejeta area of Abraka, Mr. Monday, attributed the increase in rent to the rising cost of maintaining buildings and the high prices of construction materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEverything is now expensive in Nigeria. Cement, paint, plumbing materials and even workers\u2019 payment have increased. Landlords believe they need to increase rent so they can maintain their properties,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The caretaker added that some landlords also take advantage of the high demand for accommodation caused by the large student population in Abraka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn this area, once students are preparing to resume school, houses finish quickly. Some landlords use that opportunity to increase the rent because they know students need accommodation urgently,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He disclosed that a self-contained apartment that previously rented for about \u20a6120,000 now costs between \u20a6180,000 and \u20a6200,000 in some parts of Abraka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some students who spoke with our correspondent expressed frustration over the development, noting that the increase has made it difficult to balance accommodation expenses with school fees, feeding, and transportation costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A student living around Campus Three said the situation had become stressful for many undergraduates who are already struggling financially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residents have appealed to landlords and community leaders to consider students\u2019 financial challenges before increasing rents excessively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also called on government authorities to introduce measures that would help address the continuous rise in accommodation costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As another academic session approaches, many students remain worried about securing affordable housing within the university community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
