Hundreds of students of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, are facing increasing accommodation challenges as limited hostel spaces force many into expensive off-campus housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Findings by our correspondent reveal that available hostel facilities have failed to match the university\u2019s growing student population, leaving many students with no option but to seek accommodation in surrounding communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students described the hostel allocation process as highly competitive, with available spaces often filled shortly after registration opens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 100-level student who spoke on the condition of anonymity said she made several attempts to secure a hostel space but was unsuccessful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI tried several times to get a hostel space, but it was already filled before I could complete my registration. Now I have to stay off campus, which is very stressful,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students living outside the university campus are also facing increased financial pressure due to rising accommodation costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many students currently pay between \u20a6200,000 and \u20a6400,000 per academic session depending on the location and type of accommodation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another student said the cost of off-campus living goes beyond rent, as transportation expenses further increase the financial burden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe rent is too high, and aside from that, I still spend money on transportation every day to attend lectures. Sometimes I even miss classes because of the distance,\u201d the student said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond financial challenges, students also raised concerns about security, electricity supply, water availability, and sanitation in some off-campus residences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A student living outside campus said she would prefer university accommodation if more spaces were available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t feel completely safe where I stay. The environment is not well secured, and there have been cases of theft,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students also complained that long commuting distances affect their ability to attend early lectures and participate fully in campus activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some students called for greater transparency in hostel allocation and improved communication from university authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responding to the concerns, the Director of Welfare of the Students\u2019 Union Government (SUG) said the accommodation challenge reflects a common problem among many state universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She explained that DELSU has a student population exceeding 40,000, while available hostel spaces remain limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to her, hostel allocation operates on a first-come, first-served basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She added that university management, led by the Vice-Chancellor, has plans to improve hostel conditions and address student complaints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite these assurances, many students believe urgent action is needed, including expansion of hostel facilities and partnerships with private developers to provide affordable accommodation.
