The Students\u2019 Union Government (SUG) of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has partnered with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to establish a voter registration centre on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative is aimed at making it easier for students to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of future elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the initiative, many students had to travel to INEC offices in Asaba or Warri to complete registration, creating additional financial and transportation challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The temporary registration centre, located at the SUG Secretariat, Site 3, is equipped with biometric devices, registration desks, and verification officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The centre operates daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. under the supervision of INEC officials assigned to the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SUG President Comrade Kenneth Ovie said the partnership was developed to address student concerns about difficulties accessing voter registration services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to him, many young Nigerians complain about leadership but fail to participate fully in the electoral process because of registration barriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery election cycle, we complain about leaders we didn\u2019t choose. But how many of us are actually registered to vote? We wanted to remove every excuse,\u201d Ovie said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

INEC officials reported that 247 students had completed registration within the first week of the exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An INEC Assistant Electoral Officer coordinating the programme, Mr. Emmanuel Okonkwo, said young people respond positively when registration facilities are brought closer to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some students welcomed the initiative, describing it as convenient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 300-level Political Science student, Ajirioghene Ederohor, said she previously spent hours travelling to register but completed the process within 45 minutes on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, some students reported challenges with the biometric system, especially fingerprint recognition failures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The SUG said the initiative forms part of its broader civic engagement campaign, \u201cClaim Your Power,\u201d<\/strong> which includes voter education programmes, debates, and plans for a mock election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
