{"id":736,"date":"2026-07-11T10:24:34","date_gmt":"2026-07-11T09:24:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=736"},"modified":"2026-07-11T10:24:35","modified_gmt":"2026-07-11T09:24:35","slug":"ijaw-urhobo-leaders-ask-protesters-to-vacate-oil-facilities-after-tinubus-intervention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=736","title":{"rendered":"Ijaw, Urhobo Leaders Ask Protesters To Vacate Oil Facilities After Tinubu&#8217;s Intervention"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leaders of the Ijaw and Urhobo ethnic nationalities in Warri Federal Constituency have appealed to protesters occupying oil and gas facilities and blocking waterways in the area to withdraw following intervention by President Bola Tinubu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The appeal followed a series of meetings involving the Federal Government, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and former Niger Delta militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The protests began after concerns emerged over the implementation of a fresh ward and polling unit delineation exercise conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in line with a Supreme Court judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The demonstrations spread across parts of Warri North, Warri South, and Warri South West Local Government Areas, resulting in the occupation of some oil facilities and the blockade of sections of the Escravos River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>READ ALSO:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=731\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"731\">Oborevwori To Host Delta Security Summit On Collective Responsibility<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement signed by prominent Ijaw and Urhobo leaders, including Godspower Gbenekama, Victor Okumagba, Denbo-Denbofa Oweikpodor, and Westham Adehor, stakeholders called for calm and peaceful resolution of the dispute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leaders disclosed that Governor Oborevwori convened an emergency meeting involving Ijaw, Itsekiri, and Urhobo representatives in Asaba on June 8, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They added that Tompolo later met representatives of the three ethnic groups at Oporoza, Gbaramatu Kingdom, where he appealed for restraint and protection of oil and gas infrastructure.According to the statement, President Tinubu subsequently held a meeting with representatives of the ethnic groups at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leaders said the President urged stakeholders to embrace compromise, understanding, and peaceful coexistence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>READ ALSO:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=327\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"327\">28-Years-Old Man Swindles JUPEB Students, Diverts N15 Million School Fees<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They quoted the President as calling for an equitable political arrangement among the three local government areas that make up the constituency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the interventions, the leaders appealed to protesting youths, women, and other stakeholders to vacate occupied oil facilities and waterways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They described the decision as a demonstration of respect for the President&#8217;s intervention and an opportunity to resolve outstanding issues through dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Leaders of the Ijaw and Urhobo ethnic nationalities in Warri Federal Constituency have appealed to protesters occupying oil and gas facilities and blocking waterways in the area to withdraw following intervention by President Bola Tinubu.
