The poor condition of roads and persistent flooding in Abraka have become a major source of concern for students and residents, as the ongoing rainy season continues to expose the town\u2019s inadequate drainage infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several roads in student-populated areas, including routes leading to Delta State University, DELSU, are routinely submerged after heavy rainfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flooding has made movement difficult for pedestrians, motorists, and commercial transport operators, with large pools of stagnant water now occupying many streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many students, navigating flooded roads has become a daily struggle. Clothes, shoes, and bags are often soaked in mud before lectures, while others worry about health risks linked to walking through stagnant water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nelson Victor, a 400-level Library and Information Science student of DELSU, described the situation as frustrating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe roads are in a terrible state. Whenever it rains, almost every street becomes flooded, making it difficult to attend lectures or carry out daily activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cStudents spend money replacing damaged footwear, while some commercial bike riders avoid certain roads because of their condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s something that affects everyone living in Abraka,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commercial motorcycle operators, popularly known as okada<\/em> riders, said they now charge higher fares during and after rainfall due to the risks of navigating potholes and flooded streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some riders avoid heavily flooded areas entirely, forcing commuters to complete their journeys on foot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Business owners along affected streets also report a drop in customers whenever it rains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many residents stay indoors or avoid impassable roads, cutting into the daily sales of small businesses that rely on students and local residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stakeholders say the poor road network is slowing Abraka\u2019s growth and affecting its image as a university town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As host community to DELSU, Abraka attracts thousands of students, parents, visitors, and investors yearly. However, bad roads, poor drainage, and recurring flooding create an unfavorable impression and discourage investment in housing, businesses, and tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residents argue that improved road infrastructure would ease transportation, boost economic activities, and enhance the overall image of the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are calling on the Delta State Government, local authorities, and relevant agencies to prioritize the construction of effective drainage systems, rehabilitate damaged roads, and implement sustainable flood-control measures across the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the rainy season continues, residents fear that without urgent intervention, flooding and deteriorating roads will keep disrupting academic activities, increasing transportation costs, damaging property, and hindering the long-term growth and development of Abraka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Prof. Samuel Asagba, has approved a mandatory one-day sensitization programme on Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD) compliance for all final-year students.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
