Umude Oshevire Paul said malaria remains one of the most common illnesses for which residents seek treatment at the pharmacy.

READ ALSO: Why Society Should Promote Healthy Masculinity And Tame Toxic Masculinity

He advised residents to avoid self-medication, keep their surroundings clean, clear stagnant water around their homes, use insecticide-treated mosquito nets and seek proper medical attention whenever they experience symptoms of malaria.

Residents interviewed during the course of this report also linked the frequent occurrence of malaria to the high mosquito population in many residential compounds and student hostels across Abraka.

One resident, who identified herself as Mama Ejima, described the mosquito situation in the community with a touch of humour.

“The mosquitoes in this environment are too much and so big that you will even feel the weight when one passes your ear,” she said, laughing.

Although official statistics were not available at the time of this report, interviews conducted with health workers, a pharmacist, a patient and residents suggest that malaria remains a major public health concern in Abraka. The findings highlight the need for improved environmental sanitation, proper mosquito control measures and sustained public health awareness to reduce the spread of the disease.

By Miracle Anigbogu Malaria remains one of the most common illnesses treated at health facilities in Abraka, Delta State, according to interviews and observations gathered during visits to healthcare centres, a pharmacy and discussions with residents in the community.
