Residents of Abraka, Delta State, have expressed concern over recurring flooding during the rainy season, attributing the problem to the effects of climate change and inadequate drainage infrastructure in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several streets and major roads in the university town become flooded after heavy rainfall, disrupting transportation, business activities and daily life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An online human hair vendor, Jessica Onoriode, said persistent flooding has negatively affected her business, particularly the delivery of products to customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to her, heavy rainfall often makes her street inaccessible, preventing dispatch riders from reaching her home on time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Whenever it rains heavily, my street becomes flooded and my rider finds it difficult to pick up orders, this delays deliveries to customers, and many of them are unhappy because their orders arrive late,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Environmental advocate Dr. Efe Ochuko called for collective action to address the impact of climate change, and reduce the risk of flooding in communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He urged residents to plant trees, avoid bush burning and indiscriminate waste disposal, and refrain from dumping refuse in drainage channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Ochuko also called on the government to invest in drainage infrastructure, strengthen flood early warning systems and intensify efforts to reduce gas flaring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stressed that tackling climate change requires the combined efforts of government and citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“If everyone plants a tree and stops blocking drains with waste, Delta State will be protected from the effects of climate change,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is believed by the residents that Improving drainage systems, promoting environmental sanitation and encouraging climate friendly practices will help to reduce flooding, and protect lives and property in Abraka and other communities across Delta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
