Students living in off campus accommodation around Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, have raised concerns over poor housing conditions, saying low rental costs often come with inadequate facilities and uncomfortable living environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A student resident, Destiny, said the affordability of his accommodation is the main reason he has remained there despite facing several daily challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to him, the relatively low rent is attractive compared with other properties in the area, where students often pay higher prices for accommodation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The rent is very affordable, and that is why I have stayed,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the lower cost, Destiny said tenants experience persistent water shortages, forcing them to queue for water early each morning before leaving for lectures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Before we go to class, we have to stand in long queues to fetch water, sometimes the delays make us late for lectures,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also complained about excessive noise within the compound, noting that it makes it difficult to rest and concentrate on academic work, particularly during examination periods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to him, the constant disturbance from neighbours and surrounding activities, has reduced the amount of quiet time available for studying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Destiny further disclosed that the building has structural defects, including a leaking roof that allows rainwater into rooms during heavy rainfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the situation has damaged personal belongings, including books and clothing, and has increased his living expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the challenges, he explained that moving to another apartment would require paying significantly higher rent, which many students cannot afford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The student’s experience reflects the growing concerns of many undergraduates, who struggle to balance affordable accommodation with decent living conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residents have called on landlords to improve the maintenance of student housing by providing reliable water supply, repairing damaged structures and creating more conducive living environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also urged relevant authorities to encourage better housing standards around the university to ensure students have safe and comfortable accommodation that supports their academic pursuits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
