{"id":802,"date":"2026-07-12T05:24:15","date_gmt":"2026-07-12T04:24:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=802"},"modified":"2026-07-12T05:24:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-12T04:24:17","slug":"students-raise-security-concerns-over-off-campus-crime-in-abraka","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=802","title":{"rendered":"Students Raise Security Concerns Over Off-Campus Crime in Abraka"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Clement Clementina Ogheneyenrowo<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, have expressed growing concerns over insecurity in off campus environments, saying incidents of robbery and harassment continue to threaten their safety after lectures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many students who reside in private hostels around the university said they feel most vulnerable while returning home at night, particularly in areas with poor lighting and limited security presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 200 level Banking and Finance student, Joy Efe, said she takes extra precautions whenever she leaves campus in the evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Once I pass the Campus III gate on my way to my hostel on Palmer Road, I become very cautious, l keep my phone out of sight and avoid answering calls after 8 p.m. because I don&#8217;t feel safe,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>READ ALSO:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=798\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"798\">DELSU Security, Police Strengthen Partnership to Enhance Campus Safety<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another student, Elkanah, a 300 level Microbiology student, recounted how he was allegedly robbed near Winners Junction in March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to him, his mobile phone was stolen at about 8:30 p.m., and the suspects escaped before help could arrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police authorities in Abraka advised students to avoid walking alone late at night and to remain vigilant, nothing that robbery incidents involving students have been reported in areas such as Winners Junction, the road behind Campus III and Ekrejeta Road, especially during the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A hostel owner, Mrs. Charity, said she had installed security gates and lighting within her property to improve the safety of her tenants.She explained that parents often contact landlords whenever students experience security incidents outside the hostel environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>READ ALSO:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=323\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"323\">Normalcy Returns To Campus As Striking Staff Suspend Action<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some students also said they rely on WhatsApp groups to enhance their safety by sharing live locations, informing friends of their movements and arranging to meet one another at designated points when returning home late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students identified poor street lighting as another major concern, particularly along the route from Campus III to Ekrejeta Junction, where several streetlights are reportedly not functioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They added that many now spend between \u20a6800 and \u20a61,000 on transportation at night to avoid walking through isolated areas, while others leave campus earlier to reduce their exposure to security risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To minimise the risk of attacks, students said they often move in groups, avoid displaying mobile phones in public and use busier routes even when they are longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>READ ALSO:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=118\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"118\">Hope Rises for 160 Beneficiaries As Church Organises Free Medical Outreach in Abraka<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They called for the installation of additional streetlights, increased security patrols and stronger collaboration between the university management, the Students Union Government (SUG), landlords and security agencies, to improve safety in communities surrounding the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The students maintained that a large proportion of the university population lives off campus, therefore improving security beyond the university gates is essential to protecting students, and supporting a conducive learning environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Clement Clementina Ogheneyenrowo Students of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, have expressed growing concerns over insecurity in off campus environments, saying incidents of robbery and harassment continue to threaten their safety after lectures.
