{"id":854,"date":"2026-07-12T15:17:57","date_gmt":"2026-07-12T14:17:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=854"},"modified":"2026-07-12T15:17:58","modified_gmt":"2026-07-12T14:17:58","slug":"number-of-students-run-enterprises-soars-amid-inclement-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=854","title":{"rendered":"Number Of Students-Run Enterprises Soars Amid Inclement Economy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By<\/strong> <strong>Iyere<\/strong> <strong>Uvarobe<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Student entrepreneurship is fast becoming more common in Site 3, Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, as many students are starting small businesses to support themselves while studying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the rising cost of food, accommodation, transportation, and other school expenses, many students have decided not to depend only on the money they receive from their parents or guardians. Instead, they are creating businesses that help them earn extra income and meet their daily needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A visit to Site 3 shows that many students are involved in different types of businesses. Some run hairdressing and barbing shops, while others sell food, drinks, snacks, peppered ponmo and meat, pastries, clothes, shoes, cosmetics, and phone accessories. There are also students who offer printing and photocopying services, laundry services, makeup, photography, fashion designing, and POS transactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These businesses have become important because they provide services that students need every day. Many students prefer buying from their fellow students because the businesses are close to their hostels, the prices are affordable, and they receive friendly customer service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking with Campus News,Ejiro treasure , a student who owns a hairdressing business, said starting the business has helped her become more responsible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRunning a business and going to school at the same time is not easy. There are days when I have lectures and customers waiting for me, but I try to plan my time well. The business has helped me become more independent and has taught me how to manage money,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oghene Fejiro Praise, who sells peppered ponmo and meat, said she started the business because she wanted to earn extra money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe business has really helped me. I use the money to buy my textbooks, pay for handouts, and take care of some of my personal needs. Even though it can be stressful during exams, I don\u2019t give up because it is worth it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some students who buy from these businesses said they enjoy the convenience of getting what they need without leaving Site 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Daniel Okoro, a 300-level student, said student businesses have made life easier for many students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhenever I\u2019m hungry, I can easily buy food nearby. If I need to print an assignment or get a haircut, I don\u2019t have to travel far. It saves time, and I like supporting my fellow students,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another student, Esther Miller Bubor, said student entrepreneurs are making good use of their talents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMany students are using their skills to solve problems and earn money at the same time. I think it is a good thing because it encourages hard work and creativity,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the benefits, student entrepreneurs said they face several challenges. Some complained about the high cost of buying materials, while others mentioned poor electricity supply, limited capital, and balancing business with lectures, assignments, tests, and examinations. They also said there are times when they have to close their businesses to attend classes or prepare for exams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even with these challenges, many students believe the experience is preparing them for the future. They said running a business has improved their communication skills, customer relations, financial management, and confidence. They also believe the knowledge they are gaining now will help them after graduation, whether they choose to become business owners or work in other professions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some lecturers have also encouraged students to develop entrepreneurial skills while in school, saying it will help them become self-reliant and create employment opportunities for others in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As more students continue to start businesses, Site 3 is becoming known not only as a place where students live but also as a place where young entrepreneurs are building their dreams.
