Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka, has appealed to Nigerians for support to sustain and improve its academic standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Asagba, made the appeal on Tuesday during a media briefing at the university in Abraka, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State. The briefing was held to formally announce the institution\u2019s 18th convocation ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

University Records National Recognition<\/em>
Asagba said DELSU has \u201ccome of age,\u201d noting that the latest Times Higher Education Ranking placed the university as the best state university in Nigeria and 12th overall among Nigerian universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Professor of Environmental Biochemistry and Toxicology said the ranking reflects the university\u2019s strong national standing and growing competitiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 8th substantive Vice Chancellor, who assumed office on December 1, 2024, said great universities require collective effort and shared responsibility to maintain excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Highlighting achievements under his administration, Asagba said DELSU has established new faculties of Environmental Sciences, Computing Sciences, and Allied Health Sciences in line with global trends to equip students with future-ready skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that his administration completed a strategic access road within six weeks and that a 500-seater theatre is ongoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other projects, he said, include: \u201cFaculty of Agriculture complex in progress, renovation of lecture halls, labs, offices, repurposing of the old library, and high-speed fibre-optic internet across the campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEstablishment of a 3rd Deputy Vice Chancellor, procurement of over 1,000 modern computer systems, stable school fees, promotion across cadres, and expanded training opportunities, among others.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asagba said the university\u2019s digital transformation initiatives have led to an efficient result processing system, a unified admissions and medical screening portal, and improved online payment systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Vice Chancellor appreciated the Delta State Government for its strategic interventions, including the completion of the Senate Building and prompt payment of staff salaries and medical allowances for DELSU Teaching Hospital, Oghara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He highlighted the need for a modern sports complex to develop talents and promote health, wellness, and community engagement, and called on well-meaning individuals and alumni to partner with the university to achieve the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In line with global academic tradition, Asagba announced that the university will confer Honorary Doctorate Awards on three distinguished Nigerians during convocation in recognition of their contributions to society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The honourees are: HRM Enyi Odini, Ukwata I of Umukwata Kingdom; Dr. Muhammadu Indimi; and Mrs. Grace Aghoghovbia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responding to questions from journalists, Asagba urged students to take advantage of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, to address their financial needs on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also disclosed that the university spends about N57 million on diesel monthly and over N50 million on electricity bills. He said the institution is exploring alternative energy options to address power challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
