Residents and students in Abraka, Delta State, have raised concerns over the worsening condition of roads in the community, saying the problem becomes more severe during the rainy season as flooding and muddy roads disrupt daily activities and livelihoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A visit to parts of the town after recent rainfall showed several roads covered with muddy water, making movement difficult for pedestrians, students, motorists and commercial transport operators. Many residents attributed the problem to deteriorating road surfaces and inadequate drainage channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students, who make up a significant portion of Abraka\u2019s population due to the presence of Delta State University, DELSU, said the poor road network often prevents them from attending lectures, religious services and other engagements on time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some said they frequently arrive at their destinations with clothes and footwear stained by mud after walking through flooded streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saviour Odagwe, a student, recounted an experience on his way to church after rainfall.
\u201cI was dressed in a white outfit for church, but before I got there, mud from the road had splashed all over my clothes. I had no choice but to return home because I couldn’t continue in that condition. It was frustrating, and experiences like this are common whenever it rains,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Business owners also lamented the impact of the poor roads on their income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Madam Rachel, a provision store owner in Abraka, said floodwater discourages customers from visiting her shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen it rains, many customers stay away because they don’t want to walk through the mud. Sometimes the water even enters my shop and damages some of my goods. It affects my business and leads to losses,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commercial tricycle operators said the condition of the roads has reduced their daily earnings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chidi, a tricycle rider, explained that many areas become inaccessible after heavy rainfall.
\u201cDuring the dry season, we can easily reach these places, but once the rains begin, the roads become too bad for us to enter. We have to turn down trips, and that means we lose money almost every day it rains,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some residents observed that the absence of proper drainage systems in developing parts of Abraka allows rainwater to accumulate on roads, worsening flooding and accelerating damage to road surfaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are calling on the Delta State Government and relevant local authorities to rehabilitate the affected roads and construct effective drainage systems to reduce flooding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residents also urged property developers and landlords to include proper drainage channels when constructing houses and commercial buildings to improve rainwater flow and reduce damage to surrounding roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many expressed hope that prompt intervention would improve transportation, protect businesses from avoidable losses, and make movement safer and more convenient for students and other members of the community during the rainy season.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
