A DELSU student and a fashion designer have commended Nigerian music star Davido for using fashion to draw global attention to insecurity in Nigeria during the FIFA World Cup Countdown Concert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The outfit, which featured the names of abducted schoolchildren and teachers, was described as more than a performance costume \u2014 a statement on the security challenges facing the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Udechukwu Maria Goretti, a Biochemistry student at Delta State University, Abraka, said she was impressed when she first saw the outfit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her admiration deepened after learning the jacket carried the names of 39 abducted schoolchildren and seven teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI normally idolized Davido, but after seeing that outfit, I fell in love with his personality and charisma,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Goretti, the singer used his global platform to highlight the realities Nigerians face.

\u201cDavido did the right thing because he is creating awareness for the whole world\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe is making people know what Nigerians are passing through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe may be smiling, but we are going through a lot of pain.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She called on other celebrities to speak up on national issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey should not only use their clothes to pass important messages; they should also be advocates for what is happening in Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not all of us have the opportunity to leave the country if things go wrong, so those with a voice should speak for the people,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Goretti noted that one reason she admires Davido is his willingness to address issues affecting the country despite having the means to live abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe has the opportunity to leave Nigeria at any time, yet he still speaks about the problems facing the country. That is one of the reasons I am a big fan of his,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also reacting, Okpara Shedrack, a fashion designer since 2015, described the outfit as creative and purposeful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe designer did a great job. It was not just about the design but also the message it carried. That message made many people, including me, appreciate the outfit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shedrack said the outfit stood out because it transcended the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMost celebrity outfits are made just for an occasion, but Davido’s outfit went beyond the event. He was not only there to perform; he was telling the world that something is wrong in Nigeria. The names on the jacket made the outfit more meaningful and gave it a strong purpose,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted that clothing, like art, can be used to communicate important messages and drive social change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI would love to design an outfit like this because Nigeria is going through a lot. Anyone who has the opportunity should use their talent to help the country. If I have the chance, I would design clothes that speak for the people and become a voice for the nation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both interviewees agreed that Davido\u2019s outfit was more than a fashion statement.
