For many students living in Abraka, Delta State, the rising cost of everyday necessities has become a growing financial burden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From accommodation and food to cooking gas and transportation, students of Delta State University, DELSU, say the high cost of living in the university community is making survival increasingly difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several students expressed concern that prices of goods and services in Abraka are far higher than they anticipated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oteri Divine, a 400-level Microbiology student, alleged that some traders take advantage of students\u2019 limited options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey believe students have no choice but to buy whatever price they put on their goods because everyone has to survive,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benedita, a 300-level Botany student, said although the situation is tough, students have little control over it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe cost of commodities is really high, but there is nothing we can do about it. We just have to manage,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While students in higher levels said they have gradually adjusted to the economic reality in Abraka, many newly admitted students are struggling to cope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am in 100 level, and like many other new students, I never imagined things would be this expensive,\u201d one student said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Traders, however, said they are not solely responsible for the price hikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mrs. Trust, a trader at River Road, explained that the rising cost of purchasing goods from suppliers has forced retail prices up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe suppliers bring the goods to us at high prices. We also spend money on transportation, and we still need to make a profit,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another trader at Abraka Main Market attributed the high prices to the town\u2019s dependence on neighboring communities for essential goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the trader, commodities such as vegetables and palm oil are sourced mainly from Eku, Igun and Warri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additional transportation costs, along with other business expenses, inevitably increase the prices paid by consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are not happy about the situation either,\u201d the trader said. \u201cWe buy at high prices, pay transport costs and other expenses before selling. We also need to make a living.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students continue to express frustration over the rising cost of living, while traders argue that they are also affected by the country\u2019s economic challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The situation reflects the wider inflation being experienced across Nigeria, where increasing transportation costs, inflation and supply chain challenges continue to push up the prices of goods and services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many students depend on allowances from parents or guardians that no longer cover their basic needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stakeholders say addressing the problem will require broader economic measures, improved transportation, and efforts to reduce the cost of supplying goods to university communities like Abraka.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
