Public outrage has continued to grow following the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Mene
Ogidi by a police officer in Effurun, Delta State, in an incident that has reignited concerns
over police brutality in Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The incident occurred on April 27 after Ogidi reportedly responded to a request from a
friend to collect a package at Effurun Main Park along Sapele Road.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to eyewitnesses and members of the victim’s family, a disagreement arose after
the individual in possession of the package allegedly demanded payment before releasing
it. The package was subsequently opened, revealing a pistol and ammunition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Witnesses said bystanders restrained Ogidi by tying his hands behind his back before
notifying the police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, they alleged that ASP Nuhu Usman, who was reportedly off duty and not part of
the responding patrol team, arrived at the scene and shot the restrained suspect at close
range before he was taken to Ekpan Police Station, where he later died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Harrison Gwamnishu, a human rights activist with the Safecity Foundation, said his
independent investigation and available video footage indicated that Ogidi was already
restrained and posed no immediate threat at the time he was shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The victim’s mother, Mrs. Stella Ogidi, said Mene was the second son she had lost in police
custody, alleging that another son died following an arrest in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The Nigeria Police Force subsequently dismissed ASP Nuhu Usman and four other officers
connected with the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police authorities said the officers would face prosecution after a disciplinary panel found
that the use of firearms violated established operational procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Despite the disciplinary action, civil society organisations have called for a transparent and
independent investigation, arguing that all officers involved should be publicly identified
and held accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Ogidi’s family also demanded justice, insisting that dismissal from service alone was
insufficient punishment for those responsible for the killing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The incident has renewed national debate over police accountability and the need for
sustained reforms aimed at preventing extra-judicial killings and restoring public
confidence in law enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
