The Vice-Chancellor of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Professor Samuel
Ogheneovo Asagba, has reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to providing a safe
learning environment for students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The Vice-Chancellor made the commitment during Campus Organising 2026, a dialogue
on sexual harassment prevention and peer advocacy organised by the Gender Mobile
Initiative in collaboration with the Centre for Gender and Development Studies (CGDS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The programme, held at the 500 Capacity Lecture Theatre in the Faculty of Education,
brought together students, lecturers and university officials to promote awareness of sexual
harassment prevention and encourage the use of confidential reporting channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Represented by the Head of the Department of Economics, Professor Callister Obi, the
Vice-Chancellor described the programme as timely and commended the organisers for
supporting the university’s efforts to promote dignity, accountability and student welfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Creating a safe learning environment remains one of the university’s priorities.
Programmes like this encourage students to speak up and seek justice whenever they
experience any form of harassment,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Director of the Centre for Gender and Development Studies, Dr. Hilda Olele, urged
students not to remain silent whenever they experience or witness sexual harassment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She encouraged victims and witnesses to utilise established reporting channels to ensure
that offenders are held accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Participants received training on peer advocacy and were introduced to the Gender Mobile
digital reporting platform, which enables confidential reporting of sexual harassment cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme also featured practical demonstrations on using the application,
anonymous reporting exercises and presentations by resource persons on safeguarding
students within tertiary institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Speaking after the event, Dr. Mrs. Edewor of the Department of Geography and
Environmental Sustainability described the initiative as timely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


She noted that students face numerous challenges, including harassment and extortion, and
stressed the need to provide safe channels through which victims can seek help.
The programme concluded with a call on students to become peer advocates against sexual
