Students living in Abraka have expressed concern over the increasing financial burden
caused by rising electricity tariffs despite the widespread adoption of prepaid electricity
meters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Findings by this reporter indicate that although prepaid metering has improved
transparency in electricity billing by eliminating estimated charges, many students say the
continuous increase in tariffs has made electricity increasingly unaffordable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Speaking during an interview, Comr. Agbamuche Bethel Osamudiame, President of the
Faculty of Communication and Media Studies Students\u2019 Association (COMMESSA), said
prepaid electricity has become one of the biggest financial challenges facing students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


“The prepaid meter itself is not affecting my personal life; it is affecting my finances. A
few years ago, \u20a610,000 worth of electricity lasted for an entire month. Today, the same
amount lasts only about six days,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He explained that students now spend a significant portion of their limited budgets on
electricity in addition to accommodation, feeding, transportation, internet subscriptions and
other academic expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


A prepaid meter installer in Abraka, Ogheneogaga PraiseGod, said many residents
appreciate prepaid meters because they enable consumers to monitor electricity
consumption and avoid estimated billing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, he noted that the speed at which electricity units are exhausted depends largely
on consumers’ usage patterns and the number of electrical appliances in use.
Several students interviewed expressed concern that the increasing cost of electricity has
forced many households to reduce energy consumption or contribute additional funds to
purchase electricity units more frequently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residents called on electricity regulatory authorities and distribution companies to adopt
measures that would make electricity more affordable for consumers, particularly students
