Increasing living costs are driving many students of Delta State University (DELSU),
Abraka, to combine academics with entrepreneurship as they seek additional sources of
income to meet rising educational and personal expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


With accommodation, transportation, feeding and academic materials becoming
increasingly expensive, many undergraduates have turned to small-scale businesses to
support themselves while pursuing their studies.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A survey across the university community showed that students are engaged in a wide
range of entrepreneurial ventures, including the sale of clothing, shoes, cosmetics, food
items and phone accessories. Others provide services such as hairdressing, makeup artistry,
photography, graphic design, online marketing, tutoring and event planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many students said entrepreneurship has become more of a necessity than a choice as they
strive for financial independence and reduce their dependence on parents and guardians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 300-level student who sells clothing and fashion accessories said operating a business
has enabled her to contribute to her educational expenses while gaining practical
entrepreneurial experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The business has made me financially independent and reduced the burden on my parents.
Balancing academics with business is challenging, especially during examinations and
assignment periods, but proper time management helps me cope,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another undergraduate who operates a food delivery business said the current economic
situation has compelled many students to seek alternative sources of income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The business helps me meet my daily expenses and reduces financial pressure,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the benefits, several student entrepreneurs acknowledged that combining business
with academics is not without challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


They said business commitments sometimes clash with lectures, assignments, tests and
examinations, making effective time management essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Education stakeholders who spoke on the development encouraged students to ensure that
their entrepreneurial activities do not interfere with their academic responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


They stressed that while entrepreneurship equips students with valuable business skills and
promotes financial self-reliance, obtaining a quality education should remain their primary
objective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Observers noted that the increasing number of student-owned businesses reflects the
resilience and creativity of young Nigerians adapting to the country’s difficult economic
realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


They expressed optimism that with discipline, proper planning and institutional support,
student entrepreneurship would continue to grow while complementing academic
excellence rather than undermining it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
