Medical personnel at the Delta State University (DELSU) Campus II Health Centre have
warned prospective and returning students against drug abuse, describing substance misuse
as a major threat to students’ health, academic performance and future prospects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The warning comes as the university prepares to admit a new batch of students for the
forthcoming academic session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Health officials said cases of substance abuse had been detected during previous medical
screening exercises, underscoring the need for greater awareness and preventive measures
among young people before they begin university life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Speaking on the issue, the former Director of the Campus II Health Centre, Dr. Simeon
Onakughotor, disclosed that some students who underwent medical screening tested
positive for drug use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to him, the screening results indicated that many of the affected students had
already developed the habit before gaining admission into the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


He warned that prolonged drug abuse could lead to addiction, explaining that many users
initially experiment with drugs out of curiosity, peer influence or the desire for pleasure
before becoming dependent on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


“Withdrawal syndrome remains one of the greatest challenges experienced by individuals
attempting to stop substance abuse after prolonged use,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Dr. Onakughotor added that drug abuse also affects students’ academic performance,
mental health, decision-making ability and financial stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted that substance dependence often reduces concentration and productivity, making
it difficult for students to achieve their educational goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


A student, who requested anonymity, advised incoming students to avoid drugs entirely.
“There is no benefit in drug abuse. It destroys lives, affects academic performance and can
ruin a person’s future,” the student said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The student also called for sustained awareness campaigns within the university
community, stressing that continuous education remains one of the most effective
strategies for preventing substance abuse among young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She further warned that Delta State University maintains a strict policy against drug abuse
and that students found in possession of illicit drugs on campus or in university hostels risk
disciplinary action, including rustication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As preparations continue for the new academic session, health officials urged students to
make responsible choices and embrace a drug-free lifestyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They maintained that prevention remains the most effective approach to tackling substance
abuse and safeguarding students’ academic success, physical health and personal
development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
