Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, is set to enhance students’ welfare with plans to construct a 1,000-bed hostel and a modern sports complex, Vice-Chancellor Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba has announced.

Professor Asagba made the disclosure while briefing journalists ahead of the university’s 18th Convocation Ceremony. He said the projects form part of the institution’s commitment to improving campus life and providing students with a more conducive learning environment.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, the proposed hostel will be funded through intervention funds, while additional accommodation will be developed through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangements.

He explained that the initiative is aimed at addressing the shortage of hostel spaces on campus by providing students with safer and more comfortable accommodation.

“Students’ welfare remains one of our top priorities. We are committed to providing facilities that will make learning and campus life better for everyone,” Professor Asagba said.

The Vice-Chancellor also announced plans to construct a modern sports complex featuring facilities for football, athletics, basketball, volleyball, and other sporting activities.

He noted that the complex would encourage greater student participation in sports, help identify young talents, and improve the university’s performance in inter-university sporting competitions.

Professor Asagba further disclosed that the university has expanded its work-study programme to enable more indigent students to support themselves financially while pursuing their education.

He added that DELSU has maintained its tuition fees despite the country’s economic challenges in an effort to ensure that higher education remains accessible and affordable.

“We believe no student should lose the opportunity to study because of financial difficulties. That is why we have continued to support programmes that ease the burden on our students,” he said.

On academic development, the Vice-Chancellor revealed that DELSU has strengthened partnerships with universities and research institutions in China, Canada, the United States, and South Africa.

According to him, the collaborations will create opportunities for research, staff development, innovation, and student exchange programmes while enhancing the university’s international reputation.

Many students welcomed the announcement, expressing optimism that the projects would significantly improve life on campus.

Deborah Akpoveta, a 300-Level Mass Communication student, said additional hostel spaces would reduce the challenges students face in securing accommodation off campus.

“Finding accommodation around the school is stressful and expensive. If this hostel project is completed, it will make life easier for many students and improve our safety,” she said.

Another student, Michael Efe, described the proposed sports complex as a welcome development.

“A better sports complex will encourage more students to participate in sports and help the university discover talented athletes who can compete at higher levels,” he said.

The proposed projects have generated excitement within the university community, with many students expressing hope that they will be completed as planned.

If implemented, the new hostel, sports complex, and expanded student support programmes are expected to improve students’ welfare and further strengthen DELSU’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading state universities.

A former Vice-Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka, Prof. Victor Peretomode, has proposed a tripartite governance model to sustain excellence in the institution.

Peretomode proposed the model at DELSU’s 12th valedictory lecture held on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at the university’s 750 Lecture Theatre, Site III.

The lecture was titled, “DELSU and the Burden of Expectation: The Challenges of Being Delta State’s Premier University and Rethinking Governance for Sustainable Excellence.”

He said as the state’s premier university, DELSU carries triple burdens — aspirational, political and operational — which translate into expectations such as expanding access to university education for Deltans, accommodating qualified indigenes, advancing state-specific development priorities and producing morally sound and employable graduates.

Peretomode, a Professor of Educational Administration and Higher Education, said the challenges could be addressed through his proposed “Peretomode Tripartite Model of Governance for Sustainable Excellence,” anchored on three pillars: Leadership Integrity, Funding Predictability and Quality Assurance.

He observed that DELSU has come far, but its journey is far from complete, adding that the burden of expectation it carries is not a weight to be feared, but a responsibility to be fulfilled.

Highlights of the event included the launch of two books authored by the valedictory lecturer and a musical rendition by the Department of Music.

Peretomode joined DELSU in 1992 as Senior Lecturer in the Department of Educational Management and Foundations, became a Professor in 1996 and served as its 7th substantive Vice-Chancellor from 2014 to 2019.

Tension As GLK, Okada Collide In Abraka

Published

By God’stime Oyeh

An accident involving a GLK 350 and a commercial motorcyclist happened around 11:30 a.m., reportedly after a case of wrong-lane driving.

According to eyewitnesses, the motorcyclist, popularly known as an “Aboki” bikeman, was coming from the Campus 2 area when he was allegedly hit by the GLK 350 car.

The little damage to the car caused some tension at the scene as both parties tried to explain what happened.

Eyewitnesses said the motorcyclist seemed to be at a disadvantage during the confrontation with the car driver- who was clearly trying to oppress the motorcyclist which led vigilantes and other bystanders to step in and calm things down before it got out of hand.

Things reportedly got more heated when some area boys arrived and tried to help settle the issue. The GLK 350 driver defended himself and shared his version of events, but some witnesses felt his explanation didn’t quite match what they saw happen.

As arguments continued and tempers rose, and with the car driver still wanting to oppress the motorcyclist, the Vigilantes took it upon themselves to caution him since he wasn’t trying to make peace…the matter was eventually taken to the police station for proper investigation and resolution.
