COMMESSA Day Of Prayer Unites DELSU Ahead Of Examinations
By Ohenerogbome Idoro
Students of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, gathered at the New PD Hall on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, for the second edition of the Communication and Media Studies Students’ Association (COMMESSA) Day of Prayer, where they sought God’s guidance, protection and success ahead of the forthcoming examinations.
The event, which began at 1:00 p.m., attracted students from the various departments within the faculty.
The programme featured praise and worship, prayers, exhortation and words of encouragement, with participants praying for academic excellence, good health, their families and the continued progress of the faculty.
Speaking in an interview, the Faculty President of COMMESSA, Hon. Comr. Agbamuche Bethel Osemudiamhe, said the programme was introduced to encourage students to depend on God while preparing seriously for their studies.
According to him, the Day of Prayer was first held during the first semester, while the recent gathering marked the second edition.
“The idea has always been to bring students together in God’s name to pray, not only for their examinations but also for their well-being, their health, their families and every aspect of their lives.
“We believe that when we commit everything into God’s hands, He answers our prayers,” he said.
He explained that one of the major challenges encountered while organising the programme was convincing students to attend a religious gathering.
“Many students today do not pay much attention to religious programmes.
“We were unsure of the turnout because some people see it as just another church activity.
“Another challenge was financial constraint because organising a programme like this requires resources, especially to provide refreshments for participants,” he said.
Despite these challenges, Osemudiamhe described the programme as successful, expressing satisfaction with the turnout and active participation of students.
On the message he hoped participants would take home, the COMMESSA President stressed that prayer should complement hard work rather than replace it.
“Students should commit their examinations into God’s hands, but they must also study.
“You cannot only pray without reading, and you cannot only read without praying.
“Both must go together if you want success,” he advised.
He also encouraged students who were unable to attend to participate in future editions of the programme.
“Those who missed this programme missed a wonderful opportunity to experience God’s presence.
“I encourage every student not to miss the next edition because many lives were impacted, and I believe the testimonies will speak for themselves,” he added.
Some participants also shared their experiences after the event.
Gift, a 300-level student, said she attended the programme because she felt a strong desire within her to participate.
“I never planned to attend, but something within me encouraged me to come for the prayer programme,” she said.
According to her, prayer gatherings help students seek God’s direction and remain spiritually focused despite the pressures associated with university life.
Another participant, Jecinta Oderhohwo of the Department of Mass Communication, advised students to maintain a healthy balance between their spiritual lives and academic responsibilities.
“My advice to students is that they should have a rich fellowship with God and also read their books.
“If possible, they should attend tutorials,” she said.
Jecinta identified financial challenges as one of the greatest difficulties confronting many students.
“I believe the biggest challenge students face is financial challenge,” she said.
She further described COMMESSA as a growing faculty that requires the commitment and support of every student.
“COMMESSA is a growing faculty.
“We need every hand to build it, and every student is a vital part of it,” she said.
While commending the organisers, she suggested that publicity for future editions should be improved to attract greater participation from students across the faculty.
Participants described the second edition of the COMMESSA Day of Prayer as spiritually uplifting and inspiring, noting that it reinforced the importance of combining faith with diligence in academic pursuits.
The programme concluded with prayers for students, lecturers, the university community and the continued growth of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, with many participants expressing hope that the initiative would remain a regular feature of the faculty’s activities.

DELSU VC Bans Sign-Out Celebration To Strengthen Campus Security
By Magba Nancy
The Vice-Chancellor of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Professor Samuel O. Asagba, has announced a ban on all sign-out parties and other forms of unruly celebrations within the university campuses as part of measures to strengthen security and maintain order during the ongoing 2025/2026 second semester and final-year examinations.
The directive was contained in the university’s Official Bulletin, dated Monday, August 3, 2026, and is directed particularly at final-year students who traditionally organize sign-out celebrations after completing their examinations.
According to the bulletin, the Vice-Chancellor said the decision was informed by security concerns, intelligence reports, and the need to safeguard lives and property within the university community.
Professor Asagba noted that the university would not permit any activity capable of disrupting peace, endangering lives, or compromising the security of students, staff, and visitors.
The bulletin advised all students, especially final-year students, to desist from organizing or participating in sign-out parties or any form of unruly celebration on any of the university’s campuses.
It further stated that any student found violating the directive would be deemed to have committed misconduct and would face disciplinary measures in accordance with the university’s regulations.
The sanctions, according to the bulletin, include rustication for up to two semesters, as provided in the Students’ Union Constitution and other extant university regulations.
To ensure strict compliance, Professor Asagba directed the university’s security personnel to arrest and hand over any student found violating the directive for appropriate disciplinary action.
The Vice-Chancellor emphasized that the policy is part of his administration’s commitment to maintaining a peaceful academic environment and ensuring that the examination period is free from activities capable of threatening public safety or disrupting university operations.
While acknowledging the excitement that accompanies the completion of academic programmes, the university maintained that celebrations must be conducted responsibly and in ways that do not interfere with the rights, safety, and well-being of others.
The latest directive underscores the university management’s resolve to uphold discipline and protect lives and property across the institution as the academic session gradually comes to an end.
Members of the university community have been urged to comply fully with the directive, as management warned that no student found violating the order would be exempt from the prescribed disciplinary process.
