The 2025/2026 football season ended with drama and historic results as Arsenal ended a 22-year wait to win the Premier League title, while Paris Saint-Germain, PSG, secured a second consecutive UEFA Champions League trophy.

Both competitions delivered intense matches, remarkable goals, and standout individual performances that kept fans worldwide engaged throughout the campaign.

Twenty clubs competed in the 2025/2026 Premier League season, with Arsenal and Manchester City emerging as the leading contenders.

The race remained tight until the final weeks, with every result affecting the standings for the title, European qualification, and relegation.

Arsenal finished the season on 85 points, seven points ahead of Manchester City on 78 points, to clinch the league championship.

It marked the club’s first Premier League title in 22 years.

Following a crucial encounter between both sides, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola described the match as a “final,” saying a loss would end City’s title hopes.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said his team’s position at the top was a “privilege” earned through months of consistency, and insisted the title race was not over despite setbacks.

Students who followed the season highlighted key performers.

Ozonuwe Godwin, a 100-level English and Literary Studies student, said Declan Rice had the biggest impact for Arsenal during their title-winning campaign, while Erling Haaland was Manchester City’s standout player as the league’s highest goal scorer.

Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United also drew praise. Golley Israel, a 100-level Public Relations student, said Fernandes won the Premier League Player of the Season award and the Golden Playmaker award.

He set a new Premier League record with 21 assists in a single season, breaking the previous record of 20 held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. Olorogun Success, a final-year Physiology student, added that Fernandes recorded 8 goals and 21 assists in the season.

At the bottom of the table, clubs fighting relegation produced several dramatic results, with lower-ranked teams securing surprise points against higher-ranked opponents, further underscoring the league’s reputation for unpredictability.

In Europe, 36 clubs competed in the 2025/2026 UEFA Champions League. Participants included Arsenal, PSG, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Chelsea. Each team played 8 matches in the league phase before progressing to the knockout rounds.

After months of competition, Arsenal and PSG reached the final played at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest, Hungary, on May 30, 2026.

The match ended 1-1 after extra time. PSG won 4-3 on penalties to claim their second straight Champions League title.

Felix Blessing Iruoghene, a 300-level Mass Communication student and Director of Sports, Commessa, said Arsenal’s Gabriel Magalhaes had the biggest impact for the Gunners in the competition, describing him as key to Arsenal’s defense despite missing the decisive penalty in the shootout.

Olorogun Success said what stood out for her in the Champions League was “Arsenal lost it to PSG despite not losing any game except the final match.

Football stakeholders said both the Premier League and the Champions League again demonstrated why they remain the most prestigious competitions in world football, combining tactical quality, individual brilliance, and dramatic finishes.

With the season concluded, attention now shifts to the next campaign, with supporters expecting new challenges, emerging talents, and more memorable moments in both domestic and European football.

Spain are world champions again after Ferran Torres scored a late winner in extra time to defeat defending champions Argentina 1-0 in a tense 2026 FIFA World Cup final at New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday.

The victory at MetLife Stadium, in front of 80,663 fans, gives La Roja their second World Cup title, 16 years after their 2010 triumph in South Africa.

Argentina, bidding to become the first nation since Brazil in 1958 and 1962 to win back-to-back titles, were reduced to 10 men late in regulation.

After 90 minutes ended goalless, the match turned in the closing minutes of normal time when Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez was sent off for a second yellow card following a tackle on Pau Cubarsi.

With the numerical advantage, Spain broke through late in extra time.

Ferran Torres slammed home to put Spain ahead with minutes remaining, sealing a 1-0 win and sparking wild celebrations from the Spanish bench.

Spain reached the final with a composed 2-0 semi-final victory over France in Dallas, extending a run that has seen them concede just one goal all tournament.

Argentina advanced with a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over England in Atlanta, with Lionel Messi assisting both goals in the 85th and 91st minutes.

The final marked the first ever World Cup decider between the reigning world champions and the current European champions, and pitted the tournament’s top-ranked teams.

It also featured a generational duel between 39-year-old Messi, who finished with 8 goals in the tournament, and 19-year-old Spanish prodigy Lamine Yamal.

Spain are now two-time world champions after winning in 2010. The Spanish women are also reigning world champions, having beaten England in 2023.

Argentina, champions in 1978, 1986 and 2022, fall just short in their bid for a fourth title. Messi was chasing a second straight World Cup after leading Argentina to glory in Qatar.

The match was played at New York New Jersey Stadium, home of the NFL’s Giants and Jets, and was broadcast live on FOX in English and Telemundo in Spanish in the U.S.

The final also featured FIFA’s first-ever World Cup halftime show, curated by Coldplay’s Chris Martin.

With the 2026 tournament, the first expanded to 48 teams, concluding in New Jersey, Spain leave as champions — and Argentina as runners-up in a final that lived up to its billing as a clash of Europe vs South America.
