Youth-Driven Fashion and Entertainment Industry Thrives in Abraka

Published

By Osesa Owansuwan

Best known as a university town, Abraka has grown into a vibrant hub for fashion, music, and entertainment, with its youthful population driving the expansion of businesses in the creative industry. The presence of thousands of students has fueled the growth of clothing stores, salons, tailoring shops, makeup studios, photography businesses, and event centres that depend largely on student patronage.

On weekends, major streets around the university community come alive as students visit boutiques to shop for clothes, shoes, and accessories. Hair salons and barbing shops also experience increased patronage as students prepare for birthdays, dinners, church programmes, matriculation ceremonies, and other social events.

Fashion designers in the town say the demand for custom-made outfits has continued to rise. Many customers now request styles inspired by Nigerian celebrities while incorporating traditional fabrics such as Ankara, lace, and senator materials. According to one fashion designer, social media has played a major role in exposing young people to new fashion trends and encouraging them to experiment with different styles.

The entertainment industry has also witnessed remarkable growth. Campus parties, comedy shows, live band performances, karaoke nights, and DJ events attract hundreds of young people every weekend. These activities provide opportunities for musicians, dancers, comedians, photographers, masters of ceremony, and other creative professionals to showcase their talents while earning a living.

A student who spoke with this reporter said fashion has evolved beyond simply dressing well, describing it as a means of expressing identity and building self-confidence. The student added that many undergraduates deliberately save money to purchase quality outfits because appearance is considered important during public events and celebrations.

Business owners also confirmed that entertainment-related activities have positively impacted their businesses. Restaurant operators, food vendors, and transport providers often record increased patronage whenever concerts, parties, or other social events are held. Makeup artists, photographers, and event planners also benefit from graduation ceremonies, pageants, weddings, and other celebrations organised within the community.

Despite the industry’s growth, stakeholders identified several challenges affecting the sector. They cited the rising cost of fabrics and imported accessories, unstable electricity supply, and security concerns associated with late-night events as factors increasing operating costs for entrepreneurs. Some event organisers also noted that securing sponsorship for creative programmes remains a major challenge.

Nevertheless, residents remain optimistic about the future of the industry. They believe stronger collaboration between government agencies, educational institutions, and private investors would create more opportunities for talented young people while positioning Abraka as a leading destination for fashion and entertainment in Delta State.

As the town continues to expand, the fashion and entertainment industry remains a significant contributor to Abraka’s economy. Beyond providing leisure and recreation, the sector creates employment, supports small businesses, and promotes creativity among young people, making it one of the town’s strongest drivers of youth entrepreneurship and cultural expression.

A former Vice-Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka, Prof. Victor Peretomode, has proposed a tripartite governance model to sustain excellence in the institution.

Peretomode proposed the model at DELSU’s 12th valedictory lecture held on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at the university’s 750 Lecture Theatre, Site III.

The lecture was titled, “DELSU and the Burden of Expectation: The Challenges of Being Delta State’s Premier University and Rethinking Governance for Sustainable Excellence.”

He said as the state’s premier university, DELSU carries triple burdens — aspirational, political and operational — which translate into expectations such as expanding access to university education for Deltans, accommodating qualified indigenes, advancing state-specific development priorities and producing morally sound and employable graduates.

Peretomode, a Professor of Educational Administration and Higher Education, said the challenges could be addressed through his proposed “Peretomode Tripartite Model of Governance for Sustainable Excellence,” anchored on three pillars: Leadership Integrity, Funding Predictability and Quality Assurance.

He observed that DELSU has come far, but its journey is far from complete, adding that the burden of expectation it carries is not a weight to be feared, but a responsibility to be fulfilled.

Peretomode joined DELSU in 1992 as Senior Lecturer in the Department of Educational Management and Foundations, became a Professor in 1996 and served as its 7th substantive Vice-Chancellor from 2014 to 2019.

Tension As GLK, Okada Collide In Abraka

Published

By God’stime Oyeh

An accident involving a GLK 350 and a commercial motorcyclist happened around 11:30 a.m., reportedly after a case of wrong-lane driving.

According to eyewitnesses, the motorcyclist, popularly known as an “Aboki” bikeman, was coming from the Campus 2 area when he was allegedly hit by the GLK 350 car.

The little damage to the car caused some tension at the scene as both parties tried to explain what happened.

Eyewitnesses said the motorcyclist seemed to be at a disadvantage during the confrontation with the car driver- who was clearly trying to oppress the motorcyclist which led vigilantes and other bystanders to step in and calm things down before it got out of hand.

Things reportedly got more heated when some area boys arrived and tried to help settle the issue. The GLK 350 driver defended himself and shared his version of events, but some witnesses felt his explanation didn’t quite match what they saw happen.

As arguments continued and tempers rose, and with the car driver still wanting to oppress the motorcyclist, the Vigilantes took it upon themselves to caution him since he wasn’t trying to make peace…the matter was eventually taken to the police station for proper investigation and resolution.
