A Look At Student Life and Community Engagement In DELSU
Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, continues to thrive as a vibrant academic community where students successfully balance education, leadership, entrepreneurship, social engagement, and personal development. Across Campuses I and II, recent weeks have witnessed increased student participation in activities that enrich campus life, foster unity, and promote academic excellence.
One notable development has been the growing participation of students in departmental and faculty association programmes. Various departments have organized orientation sessions, career talks, academic seminars, and professional development workshops designed to broaden students’ knowledge and prepare them for life beyond the university.
Guest speakers, including lecturers, industry professionals, and accomplished alumni, have shared practical insights and encouraged students to cultivate skills that extend beyond classroom learning. These engagements have inspired many students to embrace innovation, discipline, leadership, and lifelong learning.
Student organizations have also become increasingly active in promoting leadership, volunteerism, and community service.
Executives of several departmental and faculty associations have launched initiatives such as campus sanitation exercises, blood donation awareness campaigns, peer mentoring programmes, and student support projects. Senior students have volunteered their time to guide fresh and returning students through course registration, examination preparation, and the challenges of adapting to university life.
These initiatives have strengthened the spirit of cooperation within the university community while fostering meaningful relationships across different faculties and departments.
Campus I has remained vibrant with academic activities as lecture schedules become increasingly demanding.
Throughout the day, students can be seen moving between lecture halls, libraries, laboratories, and study centres in pursuit of academic excellence. Group discussions have become a common feature of campus life, with classmates gathering after lectures to review course materials, exchange ideas, and solve challenging academic problems together.
Many students believe that collaborative learning has enhanced their understanding of difficult concepts, improved critical thinking, and increased their confidence ahead of continuous assessments and examinations.
On Campus II, practical learning continues to play a vital role in students’ education.
Departments that require laboratory experiments, fieldwork, clinical practice, and practical demonstrations have intensified hands-on training to complement classroom instruction. Students have expressed appreciation for these opportunities, noting that practical exposure enables them to apply theoretical knowledge to real-life situations while developing professional competence before graduation.
Academic staff have also encouraged students to participate actively in research projects, innovation programmes, and independent learning activities aimed at strengthening analytical and problem-solving skills.
Entrepreneurship has become an integral part of student life at DELSU.
Faced with increasing economic challenges, many students now combine their academic pursuits with small businesses that provide financial support and valuable work experience. Businesses involving fashion design, graphic design, photography, hairdressing, catering, online marketing, baking, and computer services have gained significant popularity across both campuses.
Student entrepreneurs have also embraced digital platforms, particularly social media, to advertise their products and services, enabling them to reach customers both within and beyond the university community.
These entrepreneurial ventures not only generate income but also equip students with practical business skills that will remain valuable after graduation.
Another encouraging development has been the growing awareness of student health and well-being.
Campus-based health campaigns have educated students on the importance of personal hygiene, balanced nutrition, stress management, mental health awareness, and routine medical check-ups. Student volunteers have also encouraged their peers to adopt healthier lifestyles despite the pressures associated with academic work.
Recreational activities—including football, jogging, aerobics, fitness training, and other sporting events—have become increasingly popular, helping students maintain both physical fitness and mental well-being.
Security awareness has remained a key priority within the university community.
Students have been regularly advised to remain vigilant, particularly during evening hours, avoid isolated areas, and report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities. Security personnel continue to patrol strategic locations across both campuses while working closely with university management to maintain a peaceful and secure learning environment.
These collaborative efforts have contributed to a safer campus atmosphere that supports effective teaching, learning, and student engagement.
Beyond academics, social and cultural activities continue to enrich campus life at DELSU.
Cultural associations have organized colourful events showcasing traditional dances, indigenous cuisines, music, fashion, and customs from the diverse ethnic groups represented within the university community. These programmes have promoted cultural appreciation, strengthened friendships, and fostered unity among students from different backgrounds.
Entertainment events, talent shows, spoken-word performances, music concerts, and debate competitions have also provided students with opportunities to express their creativity, build confidence, and develop communication and leadership skills outside the classroom.
As the semester progresses, students have increasingly shifted their attention toward examination preparation.
Libraries, reading rooms, and departmental study centres have recorded higher attendance as students devote more time to revision, research, and collaborative study sessions. Peer study groups and academic mentoring have become common, enabling students to support one another in understanding difficult topics and preparing effectively for examinations.
Lecturers have continued to encourage students to attend lectures regularly, complete assignments on time, and uphold academic integrity by avoiding all forms of examination malpractice.
Student life at Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, across Campuses I and II, continues to reflect a healthy balance between academic excellence, leadership development, entrepreneurship, cultural expression, community service, and personal growth.
The active participation of students in educational and extracurricular activities demonstrates their commitment to self-development and the continued progress of the university community. Through leadership initiatives, entrepreneurial ventures, volunteer programmes, cultural celebrations, and academic pursuits, students are acquiring valuable experiences that extend well beyond the classroom.
With sustained collaboration among the university administration, lecturers, student leaders, and the wider student body, DELSU remains an institution committed to equipping students with the knowledge, practical skills, leadership qualities, and values necessary to succeed both during their university education and in their future careers.

The second edition of the DELSU Photo Festival was held on July 17, 2026, in front of the university Sports Complex. Although the programme was originally scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m., persistent rainfall delayed the event until about 2:00 p.m. A large canopy was provided to shield participants from the rain, while lively music entertained students as they arrived at the venue.
The event opened on a cheerful note with comedy and light-hearted remarks by Professor Odion Odiboh, creating an exciting atmosphere despite the weather. This was followed by the official opening address delivered by Comrade Regina Egbiamiye, President of the Department of Journalism. After her remarks, the pageantry segment commenced, with contestants representing the Departments of Mass Communication, Journalism, and Broadcasting showcasing their confidence and creativity. At the same time, judges assessed students’ photography projects while music kept the audience entertained.
One of the highlights of the festival was an interactive question-and-answer session that actively involved students and kept the audience engaged. Student union representatives, departmental executives, lecturers, and students participated throughout the programme, contributing to its lively and memorable atmosphere.
Speaking after the event, Faith Ogbotor, a 200-level Journalism student, described the festival as enjoyable and memorable. She said that although the heavy rainfall affected the programme, it did not prevent participants from having a rewarding experience.

A female student of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, was rushed to the hospital after collapsing at the university library during the ongoing MIA examination.
According to students at the scene, the incident was linked to intense heat and overcrowding in the library. This reporter witnessed the student being carried out of the library and rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
Speaking with this reporter, a Mass Communication student, Monday Akubeze, who witnessed the incident, said:
“It was on Thursday afternoon when I went to the library to read that the incident happened. A girl who had an MIA examination to write suddenly collapsed and started gasping for air. There were many students waiting to sit for the examination in the hall, but there was no fan or air conditioner to reduce the heat.”

Youths In Abraka Call For Greater Political Participation
By Purity Enumah
Youth leaders and activists in Abraka have called for increased youth participation in politics, emphasising the need for young people to take active roles in governance and leadership rather than remain passive observers.
The call was made during interviews on the state of youth involvement in politics in Abraka, where participants highlighted both the progress made and the challenges that continue to hinder meaningful youth representation in the political process.
According to a youth leader, political awareness among young people in the community has improved significantly in recent years. He noted that more youths are attending political meetings, engaging in discussions on community development, and showing interest in leadership positions.
“We are seeing more young people becoming interested in politics than before. Many are now actively involved in conversations about governance and community issues. However, there is still room for improvement because some young people feel their voices are not adequately represented,” he said.
A youth activist attributed the growing interest to the influence of social media and increased civic awareness campaigns.
“Young people now have easier access to information about government policies and political developments. Campaigns encouraging voter registration and participation in decision-making processes have also motivated many youths to become more politically conscious,” the activist said.
Despite the growing enthusiasm, the interviewees identified several obstacles facing young people who wish to participate actively in politics. Among the challenges mentioned were limited access to leadership opportunities, financial constraints, and the dominance of older politicians within existing political structures.
“Many political platforms are still controlled by older generations, making it difficult for young people to secure leadership positions. Financial challenges and political intimidation also discourage many youths from getting involved,” the youth leader explained.
On the issue of generational leadership, the activists expressed confidence that Abraka is ready for greater youth representation in public office. They argued that young people possess the creativity, innovation, and energy needed to contribute meaningfully to governance and community development.
“Leadership should be based on competence, vision, and commitment to service. There are many capable young people in Abraka who can lead effectively if given the opportunity,” one of the activists said.
The youth representatives further urged government institutions and political parties to create more opportunities for young people by supporting leadership development programmes, civic education initiatives, and youth empowerment schemes.
They also encouraged political parties to provide platforms that would enable young candidates to contest elections and participate in decision-making processes.
In a message to fellow youths, the activists urged young people not to remain on the sidelines but to engage actively in political activities, register to vote, participate in community discussions, and hold elected officials accountable.
“Politics affects every aspect of our lives. The future of our communities depends on the willingness of young people to get involved and contribute to shaping the society they want to see,” they said.
The interviews reflect the growing conversation around youth participation in politics across Delta State, as calls for increased youth representation and inclusion in governance continue to gain momentum.
