Students Embrace Entrepreneurship To Cope With Rising Cost At DELSU Site 3

Rising living costs and increasing academic expenses are pushing many students of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Site III, to embrace entrepreneurship as a means of supporting themselves financially while pursuing their education.
Across the university, students are increasingly combining academic activities with various business ventures, including food sales, makeup artistry, event decoration, fashion, and other services.
Many of them say entrepreneurship has become a practical way to meet the growing cost of tuition, accommodation, transportation, study materials, and other personal expenses without placing additional financial pressure on their families.
Although balancing lectures, assignments, practical sessions, and business activities is often demanding, many student entrepreneurs believe the experience has helped them become more responsible, disciplined, and financially independent while preparing them for life after graduation.
Jude Johnson, a 100-level Philosophy student who works part-time as a makeup artist and event decorator, said he ventured into entrepreneurship to raise funds to support himself in school.
According to him, depending solely on family support has become increasingly difficult because of the rising cost of living.
Johnson explained that the income he earns from his business enables him to pay for some of his academic needs and personal expenses.
He noted that despite the demands of running a business, careful planning has helped him remain committed to his studies.
Speaking on whether entrepreneurship affects students’ academic performance, Johnson said the outcome depends on how individual students manage their time and priorities.
“It depends on the student. It can affect some students, while others are able to balance both academics and business successfully,” he said.
He added that students who fail to organize their schedules may struggle academically, while those who are disciplined can excel in both areas.
Similarly, Favour Smart, a 100-level Education student who sells kpomo sauce, described her business as an important source of financial support.
She explained that the income from her business helps her meet some of her daily needs and reduces the financial burden on her family.
According to Smart, balancing lectures with business activities requires proper planning and support from those around her.
“The major challenge I face is time management, but with support from my sister and roommate, I am able to cope,” she said.
She explained that her sister and roommate often assist her whenever she has lectures or academic commitments, allowing her to keep her business running without neglecting her studies.
Smart encouraged newly admitted students who intend to start a business not to be discouraged by the challenges they may encounter.
“My advice is to remain consistent. Building a business takes time, and consistency is one of the keys to success,” she said.
For Miracle, a 400-level Theatre Arts student and owner of Omile Kitchen Kole, entrepreneurship goes beyond making money while in school.
He said his goal is to build a business that will outlive him and become a transgenerational and globally recognized brand.
He explained that he established the business with a long-term vision of creating employment opportunities and leaving a lasting legacy.
According to Miracle, combining entrepreneurship with academics requires discipline, consistency, determination, and proper time management.
He admitted that the journey has not been easy but said every challenge has helped him grow personally and professionally.
One of the biggest obstacles he has faced, he said, is rejection from potential customers and business opportunities.
“I see rejection as a challenge that motivates me to improve myself rather than a reason to give up,” he said.
He encouraged students who have business ideas to take the first step instead of waiting until everything is perfect.
“They should start. They will learn on the way,” he advised.
Miracle also appealed to the university management to provide financial support for students with innovative business ideas.
According to him, many students possess creativity and entrepreneurial potential but lack the capital needed to transform their ideas into successful businesses.
He suggested that the university could establish entrepreneurship grants, business competitions, mentorship programmes, and innovation hubs to support students interested in business development.
The experiences shared by the three students reflect a growing culture of entrepreneurship among undergraduates at DELSU Site III.
As economic realities continue to make university education more expensive, many students are turning to business not only as a means of survival but also as an opportunity to acquire practical skills, become financially independent, and prepare for future careers.
While student entrepreneurship presents challenges such as time management, balancing academic responsibilities, and dealing with rejection, those interviewed agreed that determination, discipline, consistency, and proper planning are essential for success.
Their stories demonstrate that entrepreneurship is becoming an important part of student life at DELSU Site III.
With greater institutional support, mentorship, and funding opportunities, more students could transform their business ideas into sustainable enterprises while successfully completing their academic programmes.

Professor Asagba has continued to prioritize the rehabilitation and expansion of infrastructure across Delta State University, Abraka.
Between May 2026 and the present, the university has highlighted several ongoing and planned projects aimed at improving the learning environment for students and staff.
Some of the key projects include renovation of classrooms and laboratories across the university to provide a better teaching and learning environment.
Upgrading ICT infrastructure, including improvements to computer-based testing (CBT) centres and digital learning facilities.
Rehabilitation of student hostels, with the Vice Chancellor stating that students would see significant improvements before the new academic session.
Construction of the Faculty of Agriculture complex and continued work on a 500-seat lecture theatre.
These projects are intended to expand teaching and research facilities.
Plans to develop a modern sports complex to improve sporting facilities and student development.
Continued support for major infrastructure through TETFund, including funding for the Faculty of Engineering and medical laboratory facilities.

The Vice-Chancellor of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Professor Samuel O. Asagba, has announced a ban on all sign-out parties and other forms of unruly celebrations within the university campuses as part of measures to strengthen security and maintain order during the ongoing 2025/2026 second semester and final-year examinations.
The directive was contained in the university’s Official Bulletin, dated Monday, August 3, 2026, and is directed particularly at final-year students who traditionally organize sign-out celebrations after completing their examinations.
According to the bulletin, the Vice-Chancellor said the decision was informed by security concerns, intelligence reports, and the need to safeguard lives and property within the university community.
Professor Asagba noted that the university would not permit any activity capable of disrupting peace, endangering lives, or compromising the security of students, staff, and visitors.
The bulletin advised all students, especially final-year students, to desist from organizing or participating in sign-out parties or any form of unruly celebration on any of the university’s campuses.
It further stated that any student found violating the directive would be deemed to have committed misconduct and would face disciplinary measures in accordance with the university’s regulations.
The sanctions, according to the bulletin, include rustication for up to two semesters, as provided in the Students’ Union Constitution and other extant university regulations.
To ensure strict compliance, Professor Asagba directed the university’s security personnel to arrest and hand over any student found violating the directive for appropriate disciplinary action.
The Vice-Chancellor emphasized that the policy is part of his administration’s commitment to maintaining a peaceful academic environment and ensuring that the examination period is free from activities capable of threatening public safety or disrupting university operations.
While acknowledging the excitement that accompanies the completion of academic programmes, the university maintained that celebrations must be conducted responsibly and in ways that do not interfere with the rights, safety, and well-being of others.
The latest directive underscores the university management’s resolve to uphold discipline and protect lives and property across the institution as the academic session gradually comes to an end.
Members of the university community have been urged to comply fully with the directive, as management warned that no student found violating the order would be exempt from the prescribed disciplinary process.

Students interviewed on campus,one of them named Chukwuyenum Abigail welcomed the initiative, describing it as a positive step toward improving the quality of education in the faculty.
She expressed optimism that increased investment in research facilities and practical learning would better prepare them for employment and postgraduate studies.
One final-year student named Okonta Confidence,noted that greater emphasis on laboratory work and research has enhanced students’ understanding of classroom concepts.
According to the student, exposure to practical experiments has increased confidence in applying scientific knowledge to real-world situations.
University administrators have equally reaffirmed their commitment to creating an enabling environment for academic excellence through continuous staff development, quality assurance and the adoption of innovative teaching strategies.
The management believes that strengthening research culture remains critical to achieving the institution’s vision of becoming a leading centre of excellence in higher education.
Education stakeholders have commended DELSU’s sustained investment in research and innovation, describing science and technology as key drivers of national development.
