The Students’ Union Government (SUG) atDelta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has officially unveiled “Synergy” as the theme for the new academic session, signaling a renewed commitment to collaboration, inclusiveness, and student-focused leadership across the campus community.

According to the union, the theme was chosen to reflect its determination to strengthen cooperation between the student body, university management, student associations, and other stakeholders in addressing issues affecting students and promoting campus development.

The SUG said the new theme would guide its activities and shape its approach to leadership throughout the session.

Union leaders explained that the administration intends to prioritize students’ welfare, improve communication, encourage active participation in union activities, and support initiatives that contribute to academic excellence and a peaceful learning environment.

They added that the idea behind “Synergy” is to ensure that every segment of the university community works together toward common goals that benefit students academically, socially, and emotionally.

Some students who reacted to the announcement described the theme as timely and relevant, especially at a period when many students are expecting more engagement from their representatives.

They expressed hope that the slogan would go beyond words and translate into practical policies, programmes, and visible improvements in campus life.

One student interviewed, Blessing Efe, a 300-level Mass Communication student, said the theme gives her hope that the union will be more inclusive this session.

“Synergy is a good theme because it shows that the SUG wants to work with students and not just speak for them.

“We want to see more dialogue, better communication, and real action on issues that affect us,” she said.

Another student, Emmanuel Ogheneovo, a 200-level Economics student, also welcomed the announcement, noting that unity among students and the union leadership would be important in achieving meaningful progress.

He said, “If the union can truly bring students together and listen to our concerns, then this session can be better than the last one. Collaboration is what we need.”

The union urged students to embrace the spirit of unity and work collectively toward achieving the goals of the new administration throughout the academic session.

It further encouraged students to remain engaged, constructive, and supportive as the SUG rolls out its plans and programmes in the coming weeks.

Media Conversation reports that the nine-day event, held annually to give students a break from academic pressure, will feature a Carnival, Trade Fair, Cultural Night, Pageant, Sports Finals, and a Grand Dinner/Award Night expected to host over 15,000 DELSU students.

The week opened with a rally on Day one, July 4th 2026, followed by the Students’ Cultural Fiesta at Campus II, where SUG President Comr.

The Kingsley Dumuje led executives dressed in traditional attire to tour cultural stands representing Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups.

Day two, Sunday July 5th, featured the Praise Festival.

Speaking to our correspondent, Stephanie, a student of Mass Communication, said, “I am looking forward to the Trade Fair because of the discount prices.

“The Cultural Fiesta is not really my area of concern, but the pageantry, I am active, and my friends are contesting too.”

According to the SUG, the event is sponsored by several brands including Whitebay, Crystal Lounge, Foodhunts, Trade With Tasha, 3CEES Hotel & Suites, O2 Arena Club & Bar, Iyke Shopping Mall, Oma Classic Hair World, Onestop Phones and Gadgets, Riode’s Hotel & Suites, Surprise by P.ng, Transglobemed Signature, and Tection Group.

Ahead of SUG Week, the union had directed all faculty and departmental associations to conclude their individual student week activities by June 26th, 2026.

Meanwhile, residents of Abraka in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State have expressed concern over the persistent rise in the prices of food crops, saying the situation has made it increasingly difficult for many households to afford adequate meals.

A visit by our reporter to the Abraka Main Market revealed that the prices of staple food items such as garri, yam, beans, maize, tomatoes, pepper and vegetables have increased significantly in recent months.

Students have continued attending lectures, preparing for examinations, participating in research, and taking part in campus programs designed to improve learning and student welfare.

One of the most discussed issues on both campuses in recent weeks has been the condition of the night reading halls. Students using the facilities at Sites 1 and 2 have appealed to the university management for improved electricity, better lighting, and upgraded study facilities. Many students said the reading halls remain important for exam preparation, especially during evening study sessions.

Academic activities have continued without interruption, with lecture halls recording strong attendance as students complete coursework, practical sessions, seminars, and departmental assignments. SUG: The Pillar Of Justice, Unity, And Student Welfare In DELSU

Published

on

By Ajirioghene Ederehor

In every higher institution, the Students’ Union Government (SUG) serves as the collective voice of the student body, championing students’ rights and promoting their welfare. At Delta State University (DELSU), the role of the SUG extends far beyond organising social activities or coordinating campus events. It has become a symbol of justice, unity, and student representation, making its contributions to the university community impossible to overlook.

Justice remains one of the fundamental pillars upon which the SUG operates. Every student deserves to be treated fairly, regardless of their background, faculty, department, or level of study. The union serves as an intermediary between students and the university administration, ensuring that legitimate complaints and concerns are addressed through appropriate channels. Whether advocating for fair treatment, engaging the university management on student-related issues, or promoting peaceful dialogue during challenging moments, the SUG continues to uphold the principles of fairness and accountability.

Beyond justice, the SUG plays a significant role in fostering unity within the DELSU community. Delta State University is home to students from different ethnic groups, religions, cultures, and social backgrounds. Despite these differences, the union consistently promotes peaceful coexistence and mutual respect through cultural festivals, sporting competitions, orientation programmes, leadership conferences, and other student-centred activities. These initiatives strengthen relationships among students and create an atmosphere where diversity is celebrated rather than a source of division.

Student welfare remains at the heart of the union’s responsibilities. From advocating for improved learning conditions to organising health campaigns, educational seminars, skill acquisition programmes, and community service initiatives, the SUG continually seeks ways to improve students’ overall experience on campus. Programmes such as free medical outreaches, awareness campaigns, and empowerment initiatives demonstrate the union’s commitment to ensuring that students thrive both academically and personally.

Student Feedback

Theophilus Daniel, a 100-level Political Science student, said in an interview: “The SUG is really doing an awesome job, especially in the area of student welfare. They take it very seriously, and that is highly appreciated. May God continue to uplift them in Jesus’ name.”

Another student, Ryan Peter, a 200-level Education student, also shared her opinion: “Since I gained admission into this great institution called DELSU, the SUG has positively impacted my studies through educational programmes and activities that broaden students’ knowledge. They are doing wonderful work, and I encourage them to continue. Their reward is close.”

The SUG also serves as a platform for leadership development. Student leaders gain practical experience in governance, negotiation, communication, conflict resolution, and public service. These experiences prepare them for greater responsibilities beyond the university and contribute to the development of responsible citizens who can make meaningful contributions to society.

However, the effectiveness of any Students’ Union depends not only on its elected executives but also on the active participation of the students it represents. Constructive engagement, responsible criticism, and collective support enable the union to perform its duties more effectively while remaining accountable to the student body.

As DELSU continues to grow as one of Nigeria’s leading universities, the importance of a vibrant and responsive Students’ Union Government cannot be overstated. The SUG remains a vital institution that protects students’ interests, promotes peaceful coexistence, and works tirelessly to improve campus life. Its commitment to justice, unity, and student welfare continues to strengthen the university community and inspire confidence among the students it serves.

Indeed, the Students’ Union Government is more than a representative body. It is the pillar upon which justice, unity, and student welfare stand at Delta State University. By remaining committed to these ideals, the SUG will continue to shape a stronger, more inclusive, and more progressive DELSU for generations to come.
